Graphis Interactive Design

It’s amazing what you can miss in two years...even if you are looking. Interactive Design2 published by Graphis showcases over 100 websites and interactive environments from the last two years. There is a great mix—for me anyway—of sites that I had missed plus the more familiar.

Lots to look at here.

It’s great to see sites that break out of or refine the mold or even better, ignore it altogether. Sites like

Basement-Life, FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology), Becoming Human, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and the San Francisco MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) among others.

The only complaints I have, and they’re small, is the credit area for each piece, which is too hard to read and the inclusion of the very few featured pieces that have big, fluffy, rounded bevels as a design element. Aside from that, there is a nice blend of different styles, concepts and technologies that make it a worthwhile reference book to own.

Graphis’ Interactive Design series has a chance to become a great visual watermark of where interactive design stands in its short history. It could also help foster a more critical and professional view of what media designers do.
